Art & Environment:

Minutes from Arts & Environment Committee Meeting, Saturday, Sept 25, 2010

Fall

  • We will decorate the worship space for Fall on Wed, Oct 6, 7:00 PM
  • Everyone please bring 3-4 pots of mums in fall colors (yellow, orange, red - NO pink or purple, please).  If you wish to be reimbursed, please keep your receipt and submit to Diane Lionti in the church office.  If you wish to donate them, and receive a letter (for tax purposes), keep your receipt and submit to Diane Lionti.
  • Kathy (Krenn) will bring the grapevine swag of fall flowers and leaves, which will be hung up behind the choir.
  • Carrie will bring artificial sprigs of leaves and orange berries, which we will try to use around the base of the candles.
  • Carrie will bring a spray of dried fall flowers, which we may use elsewhere in the church.  No decision yet.
  • Colleen will try to bring some dried hydrangeas, which we will put in vases and place either on the table in the gathering area, or at the statue of the 3 Marys.
  • If anyone is interested in shopping/looking for dried sunflowers, Japanese "lanterns" (a type of flower), or any other fall flowers, please do so.  We are trying to "freshen-up" the look of our fall decorations with these new additions.

Thanksgiving

  • We will decorate the worship space for Thanksgiving on Wed, Nov 24, immediately following morning Mass.
  • Baskets will be placed in the central area of the worship space.  Some will be filled with apples, some will remain empty, so that parishioners may place their donations inside.
  • An arrangement of gourds, Indian corn, pumpkins, etc will be placed on the table in the gathering area.
  • Judy may try to create an artful arrangement of fall harvest items in the cornucopia, near to the ambo.  It depends on if/what she finds to place in the arrangement.

Advent

  • We have not yet decided on what day we will decorate the church for Advent.  I will send another e-mail when that decision is final.
  • Since last year's mishap regarding the Advent wreath, we will try to find a suitable artificial replacement, still using the large (approximately 4 foot across) Advent wreath stand.  Judy and Kathy will attend a special sale in Mentor in Oct in hopes of finding this large artificial wreath.
  • We will not repeat the swags of purple and pink material behind the choir that change every week.  Instead we will try a new arrangement that will remain the same for all of Advent.  Except on the third week of Advent, a small bit of pink material will be added.
  • Judy had an idea for this new arrangement of material.  We will need 2 lengths approximately 3-4 feet long of 1” x 1” wood, to anchor the material.  We will also need a staple gun.  Anyone interested in donating the wood, and lending the staple gun?
  • Decorations will be kept simple and limited – so that the exuberance of Christmas will be in stark contrast.

Christmas

  • No date has been set for decorating for Christmas yet.  I will send another e-mail with more details at a later date.

Thanks everyone!  See you soon!

Minutes from February 6, 2010, 9:00 AM, Church of the Resurrection Arts and Environment Committee Meeting

  • Stations of the Resurrection to be covered with purple fabric
  • Paschal candle to be removed from church entirely
  • purple candle to be placed in candle-holder outside chapel
  • purple fabric draped over petition book holder
  • wooden Cross to be placed in the middle of church (instead of behind the Rising Christ figure)
  • baptismal font to be emptied, purple fabric to be placed inside to cover shiny, colorful tiles
  • long purple banners to be hung by custodian on either side of long windows
  • purple banners to be hung by custodian all around the church (placement to be decided by Fr Mark - last year 3 were placed above altar)
  • grape vine wreath with purple fabric draped through it, to be hung behind choir
  • one large green vase filled with bare branches (to resemble a bare tree) to be placed either 1) in between the ambo and the baptismal font, or 2) slightly behind altar to one side.   (Another idea was to have purple fabric and rocks placed at the base of the vase, and trailing onto the base of the altar.)
  • Depending on the length of the branches and the final placement of the large green vase, it may make a large enough impact in the center of church, that we should not add other decorations 1) in front of the ambo, or 2) at the base of a cluster of 3-4 candles slightly behind the altar .
  • "boulder-like" rocks, ceramic trays filled with sand, and smaller earthenware vases filled with bare branches, placed on top of purple fabric at 1) 3 Marys, 2) inside chapel, 3) on round table in gathering area, 4) at base of petition book.
  • See how it looks to cover the Christ Rising figure with sheer purple fabric – if it looks gaudy or inappropriate, just remove the fabric
  • a second large green vase filled with very long bare branches to be placed either slightly in front of or to the side of the Christ Rising figure.
NEXT MEETING: We will decorate the church for Lent on Sunday, February 14, starting at 2:30 pm.  Please plan to attend!  If we have many hands to help, we can accomplish many tasks in a small amount of time.  Please collect some bare branches, no thorns, no leaves, not muddy or wet please, and bring to church on Sun, Feb 14.  Also it will be helpful if you bring scissors, pruning shears, string, wire, etc.

AFTER the Mardi Gras on Tuesday evening, the large round table in the gathering area will have 2 swatches of purple fabric placed at right angles to each other (like 2 table runners criss-crossing in the center).  Then in the center of the table, we will place either 1) a large cactus, or 2) a large aloe plant, or 3) a vase filled with bare branches. --
