CHURCH OF THE RESURRECTION PARISH
COUNCIL MEETING Roll call: Bob Shultek, Louise Cox, Jacki Calavitta, Tony Kuhel, Judie Melillo, Sandy Patrick, Janet Payton, Mike Peterson, Lisa Frey, Meg Matuska, Terry Battaglia. Absent: Katie Burke, Joe Schlanser, David Pastor, Father Mark Faith Sharing: Led by Tony Kuhel, the subject theme was “Listening”. Lots of collective thoughts on the power and virtue of listening to others. Minutes from Meeting of 1/18/2006: Were reviewed, approved and seconded. Learning and Enrichment: Led by Mike Peterson, the subject was Discernment. Since this is so timely in regard to both the upcoming VPL2 project, and for new Parish Council members, we spent quite a bit of time defining collaboration, the four levels of collaboration (co-existence, communication, cooperation, and collaboration), and the practical steps to collaborative ministry (clarification, conviction, commitment, and capacity/capability). It was agreed that we are still in the clarification step. This was a great overview of the process – thanks to Mike and Janet for putting it together. Discussion Items: VPL2 – Since Katie could not attend the meeting, a memo from her outlining the planning was read. An educational meeting is set for Monday, March 6 at 7:00 pm and a discernment meeting is set for Monday, March 20 at 7:00 pm. Katie will specifically invite the non-Parish Council people who expressed an interest to join this group (includes Jane Hogan, Bob Beach, Mary Ann Theby, Mark and Teri Hembre, Jennifer and Mark Alstadt, Juanita Vargo, Ken Grillo, Sandy Goglin and Becky Richards). There is a Diocesan meeting for our region planned for Wednesday, April 5 at St. Noel Church, for which we should send 4 to 7 representatives (Bob S.and Katie B. to finalize participants). PC Discernment Process and Schedule – Bob distributed a document that outlines the role of council members, and a schedule for the discernment process which begins this month with the review of these documents, selection of committee chairperson, and identification of candidates; then continues through the summer, and culminates with the August Parish Council retreat. Judie Melillo and Sandy Patrick to co-chair the Discernment Committee, to work with Bob and Jacki assisting. Jacki and Louise offered to speak at weekend Masses to encourage parishioners to come forward. Discernment for DPC representative nominee – Bob distributed copies of the letter from Bishop Pilla asking for nominations for diocesan representation. A resume must be submitted to the Diocese by April 10, 2006. Bob Shultek indicated that he is interested, and all PC members encouraged him to submit his application. Thanks, Bob. Reporting Items: Sensus Fidelium – Bob reports that SF has backed away from responding to a request for input regarding selection of a new Bishop, as this is seen as a larger scope than would be appropriate for any individual parish. Lisa supported this by pointing out that there exists extensive theological history involved in the selection process. Tammy Bearss update -- Janet pointed out that their twins will be going to preschool soon. Judie pointed out that Solon offers great assistance programs. (In a subsequent meeting, we were told that the Moms Group has been providing assistance to Tammy and her family, in addition to Parish Councils’ individual gift card donations during the holidays). Big Picture Event – Wednesday, March 29 is the date for the event, with a guest speaker to talk about Catholic Social Teaching. Lisa said that information to all parishioners is being mailed next week. Don’t miss it! Youth Group – Terry reported a huge success with the Whirlyball event, with over 90 participants from area parishes ( an example of successful collaboration!). A youth retreat is being planned for the summer. Hospitality – Photos of new members and RCIA candidates are now featured in wooden frames in the gathering area. Mardi Gras event is Tuesday, February 28 – it promises a lot of fun for adults and children alike!! Mike Peterson is working with Cathi to draft a policy for the use of our facilities, which should be available soon.. Meg is working on this years’ concert series. Sponsors will be solicited once dates are set. Last fall’s concert was hugely successful. A master calendar of events from March through August was distributed to all PC members. This should aid in scheduling and avoid conflicting meetings. For all members not at this meeting, be sure to get a copy. Follow up items for March meeting: • VPL2 Committee • Discernment
