Social Justice Committee
The Social Justice Committee seeks to provide education on Catholic Social Teaching, awareness of justice issues, and opportunities for parishioners to respond to social needs.
Service and Advocacy Include:
Members of this board conduct the annual Trivison Scholarship Appeal, the Loaves and Fishes grant program, and provide guidance in the use of the Charity and Justice Fund.
Ambassadors retrieve calls from the request line, arrange time to meet clients at the pantry to select items, and keep records of those assisted. Volunteers also sort and shelve donated food.
Holiday Food Distributions
Ambassadors sort donated food and prepare boxes and bags of items for 50-150 families for Thanksgiving and Easter. They also assist loading the boxes and bags into recipients’ cars on Distribution Day.
Christmas Giving Tree
Local agencies and families are contacted and invited to provide a wish list of gift items. Ambassadors are needed to prepare the tags placed on the tree, to organize and sort the items as they are returned, and to prepare the items for distribution.
Hunger Center Outreach at the Thea Bowman Center
Ambassadors provide food and/or prepare and serve the food onsite for a noontime meal at the Thea Bowman Center in the Mount Pleasant area. Three teams rotate providing this meal on the fourth Saturday of each month.
Voter Registration
Every fall Social Justice Committee members hold opportunities for parishioners to update or secure their right to vote.
Game Nights at Cuyahoga Juvenile Corrections Center
Ambassadors play board and card games with young men at the CHJCC from 6:30-7:30pm on the second and fourth Monday of each month. Also, each month another group of ambassadors are provided with a list of young men celebrating their birthdays and provide cards that are collected and delivered to the facility.
Fair Trade Boutique
Church of the Resurrection collaborates with St. Rita Church each fall to host organizations and individuals to sell their fair-trade products. Help is needed setting up, hosting, and cleaning up after the event.
The first Saturday in September parishioners share their time and talents with a wide range of organizations in service projects of all kinds.
Members of this ministry meet bi-weekly to knit prayer shawls for anyone in need of being wrapped in the prayers of our community.
